CONCEPT

Taking the song and inspiration from ⺠主阿草(A Democracy Bumpkin) by ⿊名單工(Blacklist

Studio)for this remix project.

Blacklist Studio was formed in 1987. For most of the group's history, the lineup consisted

of Wang Ming-hui (王明輝), Chen Ming-yu (陳明瑜), Chen Ming-chang (陳明章), Will Lin (林

暐哲), Keith Stuart, and Chen

Chu-hui (陳主惠), Christine Hsu (許景淳) and Lin Mei-mang (林美璊), Puyuma-

Paiwan musician Ara Kimbo (胡德夫), and Susu Yeh (葉樹茵).

It was in 1989, two years after martial law on Taiwan was lifted, when there was a sense

of anticipation in the air for a more liberal and progressive society. In that particular year,

Blacklist Studio released their revolutionary debut album "Songs of Madness (抓狂歌)"

Emerging from Taiwan's post-martial law era, The album "Songs of Madness" has been

regarded as a pioneer in politicizing popular songs sung in the Taiwanese language. The

group channeled its discontent over the political situation then through different music

genres, and paving the way for the New

Taiwanese Nativist Music movement (新台語歌運動) in the 1990s.

The song"A Democracy Bumpkin (⺠主阿草)" from the album, however, touched the nerve

of the central government and was banned from broadcast. Widely seen as outright

political satire.

In the remix, breaking the lyrics form the song ⺠主阿草(A Democracy Bumpkin) and mix

it with the sounds from the important protest from my generation “sunflower student

movement” 2014. The singer of the song ⺠主阿草, he has also joined the movement at

that time and singing for the protest. And i have also joined the protest in 2014 as well. I try

to reconstruct the lyrics they wrote from the last generation’s protest and keep the words

which still fit the protest scenes of our generation.

Lyric

MANDARIN (TAIWAN)

The lyric I took from ⺠民主阿草:“

The lyric I took from 不不歌 original :

“不左不右 不敵不友 不明不白白 這世界真可愛“

The lyric I took from 橄欖樹 :

”不要問我從哪裡來來 我的故鄉在遠方方“

ENGLISH

The lyric I took from ⺠民主阿草:

go take a walk with friends in the morning it was a good day

we walk to the city center

we saw all the street cover with police fully armed It scared me so much that my hair stood on end so we go to asked the police” Are we preparing for war now ?”

the police laughing and said ” you young people shouldn’t care too much the political

issue”

“There are some people having conflict in front. you should go home as a good citizen

otherwise who knows maybe you will got arrest too and end up in jail if you go near, then

you can only cry. “

I said “ dear police man, I come from the countryside, it’s the first time I visit this city. We just want to go to watch movie and shopping. The conflict is not my businesses so please

let me pass.”

There is a old man stand next to us, and he introduce himself as part of Democratic Progressive Party and talked about what’s happening, more he talked about the situation he got more and more emotional and said “I’m going to join the protester to fight the

dictator in the first line.

The government told us tomorrow will be better. It must be retarded and crazy.

I wanna protest ”

The lyric I took from 不不歌 original :

”Neither left nor right, neither enemy nor friend, so unclear, this world is so lovely”

The lyric I took from 橄欖樹 :

“Don't ask me where I come from, my hometown is far away”
