Carla Boregas
(Brazil)
Bio:
Carla Boregas (b. Brazil, 1984) is a musician and sound artist. Through the manipulation of synthesizers, field recordings and acoustic sounds, she builds up sonic scenarios moved by an invisible force where the sensation of presence and discovery lies between density and delicacy. Time, space, memory and water are recurrent and intertwined themes in her work. Carla's body of work comprises composition, improvisation, performance and sound installation. She also collaborates with artists from dance, film and theater.
In 2011, Carla co-founded the punk ethos genre-bending band RAKTA (playing bass and electronics), and since then she has been a very active figure in the Brazilian scene and abroad with several solo projects and collaborations, as well as running AUTA, an extinct venue dedicated to experimental music in São Paulo, the record label Dama Da Noite Discos, and curating the Berlin festival and platform Radical Sounds Latin America.
Since 2015, she is also part of Fronte Violeta, a transdisciplinary duo that investigates sound in a multi-sensory way, always guided by a continuous interest in restoring and awakening sensitivity through a dialogue with the natural world.
In 2020, she joined the multi-instrumentalist M.Takara. Together they released two well praised albums, “Linha D'Água” (Bokeh Versions / Desmonta) and “Grande Massa D'Água” (Hive Mind Records), as the result of the amalgam of Boregas’ ethereal electronic sonorities with Takara’s jazzy improvised percussion.
In 2022, Carla was laureated with the Palma Ars Acustica prize for “"What Is Not / O Que Não Estᔓ, a radio piece created in partnership with Anelena Toku and Martha Kiss Perrone and commissioned by CTM Festival and Deutschlandfunk Kultur.
In 2023, Carla released her debut solo album called “Pena ao Mar” on the Swedish imprint iDEAL Recordings.
With her solo and collaborative projects, Carla toured intensively throughout Europe, North and South America and Japan, with main performances and commissioned works presented at Donaufestival (AT), CTM Festival (DE), Deutschlandfunk Kultur (DE), Rewire (NL), Pop Montreal (CA), Roadburn Festival (NL), Primavera Sound (ES), Festival Novas Frequências (BR), Festival Música Estranha (BR), Grauzone (NL), Supersonic Festival (UK), NRML (MX), Copenhagen Jazz Festival (DK) and MUTEK (CA).

CONCEPT
It was in 1968 in Brazil, a country suffocated by the military dictatorship, when Caetano Veloso sang "...walking against the wind..." in his song Alegria, Alegria (Joy, Joy). Reflecting on the plurality of the country's population and religions, many of which are animistic religions, I opted to work with the word "wind" and its symbolism of movement, strength, and freedom. In the midst of a world increasingly impacted by climate change and its natural disasters, which most strongly affect the less privileged layer of the world's population, I like to imagine what it'd be like if a strong windstorm carried away the tyrants, oppressors, and their powers. Alegria!
Lyric
PORTUGUESE
Caminhando contra o vento
Sem lenço e sem documento
No sol de quase dezembro
Eu vou
O sol se reparte em crimes
Espaçonaves, guerrilhas
Em cardinales bonitas
Eu vou
Em caras de presidentes
Em grandes beijos de amor
Em dentes, pernas, bandeiras
Bomba e Brigitte Bardot
O sol nas bancas de revista
Me enche de alegria e preguiça
Quem lê tanta notícia
Eu vou
Por entre fotos e nomes
Os olhos cheios de cores
O peito cheio de amores vãos
Eu vou
Por que não, por que não?
Ela pensa em casamento
E eu nunca mais fui à escola
Sem lenço e sem documento
Eu vou
Eu tomo uma Coca-Cola
Ela pensa em casamento
E uma canção me consola
Eu vou
Por entre fotos e nomes
Sem livros e sem fuzil
Sem fome, sem telefone
No coração do Brasil
Ela nem sabe, até pensei
Em cantar na televisão
O sol é tão bonito
Eu vou
Sem lenço, sem documento
Nada no bolso ou nas mãos
Eu quero seguir vivendo, amor
Eu vou
Por que não, por que não?
Por que não, por que não?
Por que não, por que não?
ENGLISH
Caetano Veloso - Joy, Joy
Walking against the wind
without handkerchief, without identity card
Under the sun of a almost december
I go...
The sunlight spreads among crimes
Spaceships, guerillas
And beautiful 'Cardinales'
I'll be...
upon the faces of presidents
in long love kisses
in teeth, legs, flags
Bombs and Brigitte Bardot
The sun shining at the news stands
fills me with joy and laziness
Who reads so many news in this world?
I go...
Among photos and names
With my eyes, so colorful
And with my heart, full of vain loves
I go
Why not? Why not?
She thinks about marriage
And I've not been to school for so long.
Without a handkerchief, without an identity card
I go ...
I drink some Coca-Cola
She thinks about marriage
And a song consoles me
I go...
Among photos and names
Without books, without gun
Without hunger, without telephone
Into the heart of Brazil
She doesn't know, I even thought
about singing on television
The sun is so beautiful
I go...
Without handkerchief, without identity card
Without anything in my pockets or hands
I want to keep living, my love
I go...
Why not? why not?
Why not? why not?
Why not? why not?
Why not? why not?
