Bio:

Alejandra Cárdenas Pacheco (aka Ale Hop) is a Peruvian Berlin-based artist, researcher and experimental musician who began her career in the 2000s in Lima’s underground scene. She composes electronic music by blending a complex repertoire of techniques for electric guitar, which she uses to create a performance of deep physical intensity. Her work includes live shows, record releases, sound and video artworks, research on sound and technology, and original music for film, and dance. She completed a BA in Art History, her master’s in Sound Studies, studies in History of Science and Technology, and is PhD candidate at Berlin University of Arts. She also co-founded the Berlin-based festival Radical Sounds Latin America (of which she was co-curator from 2019 to 2021) and, nowadays, directs the editorial platform Contingent Sounds, which facilitate critical discourses, and artistic research on listening.

CONCEPT

Since the 90s, during the dictatorship of Alberto Fujimori, in the protests against his government the chants of "Chino delicuente, el pueblo te repudia" could be heard in the streets. Currently, a new authoritarian government controlled, by the Fujimori party from the Peruvian congress, in collusion with other corrupt parties, has generated massive protests since 2022. In these times, we hear again the same chant, with a different name “Dina Asesina el pueblo te repudia”, a chant that, likewise, was transformed and refine, in the voices of the people of the city of Puno (the poorest in the country), into a Huayno (a musical genre typical of the Andean region). Thus, the mix traces the evolution from the chants during the dictatorship to its current development, at the same time making visible how history repeats itself again.

Translation note: Chino in Spanish means Chinese, but it is the nickname of the ex-president Fujimori; I chose not to translate it, and left it as Chino, as it could be confusing. Also, he is not even Chinese.
